DTwo inmates at the Fleury-Mérogis prison, in the French region of Essonne, about 30 kilometers from Paris, are at large after escaping during a trip to a forest on Tuesday.

According to the news agency Agence France-Presse (AFP), the pair fled in the Fontainebleau forest, located about 42 kilometers from the prison, when they were participating in a race with other inmates and prison supervisors and, so far, they have not been located.

According to French station BFMTV, the two inmates pretended they had an “urgent need to urinate” and went behind a tree until they managed to escape.

One of the detainees, convicted of drug trafficking, still has a year to serve. The second will still have to serve three years in prison for exhibitionism. Both, according to French police, are not considered dangerous.

The Évry Public Prosecutor’s Office has already opened an investigation into the escape.

The Fleury-Mérogis prison is the largest in France and Europe. According to BFMTV, which cites data from the International Prison Observatory, on January 1st it had 3,362 inmates, which represents an occupancy rate of 129.4%,
