As the football association of her home country announced on Sunday evening, the 23-year-old only found out about the stroke of fate after the 1-0 win in the final against England in Sydney, Australia. “In a moment of deep pain we send our sincerest hugs to Olga and her family,” wrote the association: “We love you, Olga.”

“Real Madrid would like to express our condolences and heartfelt sympathy to Olga, her family and all her loved ones,” their club wrote on its own website. Spain’s footballers had secured the World Cup title for the first time. Carmona scored the winning goal against the European champions in the 29th minute. Both teams were in the final of a World Cup for the first time.

According to the Daily Mail, her father died on Friday. The news was apparently only shared with Carmona after the World Cup final so as not to distract her. It is not known how the man died.
