O Secretary of the Ukrainian Security Council, Oleksiy Danilov, was fired and replaced by the head of the foreign intelligence service, Oleksandr Lytvynenko, according to decrees published on the Ukrainian presidential website this Tuesday.

According to Reuters, Danilov had held the position since October 2019, a few months after President Volodymyr Zelensky took office. No justification was provided for this change.

Zelensky has regularly replaced senior security and defense officials since the full invasion of Russia in February 2022.

The dismissal of Ukraine’s top general in February presaged a broader purge of the military’s top brass.

It should be remembered that the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine has a coordinating role in national security and defense issues under the command of the president. It is made up of the country’s main political, security and defense officials.
