“AThe provinces of Matanzas, Havana (west), Santiago de Cuba, Granma and Guantánamo (east) are those that record the highest number of cases”, said, on Saturday, the attorney general, cited by the Cuban state news agency (ACN ).

Yamila Pena added that 75% of these cases occurred in homes shared by couples, and 70 children and adolescents lost their mothers due to these homicides.

In response, the Cuban Attorney General’s Office proposed the creation of an “Interoperable Administrative Registry” to “have real-time information on violent deaths of women and girls for gender reasons”, reported ACN, indicating that the data was released at a meeting of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, in power.

The only official data available until now corresponded to a 2016 survey.

Independent feminist platforms pointed to 80 femicides committed this year and so far in Cuba.

The general secretary of the Pro-Government Federation of Cuban Women, Teresa Amarelle, highlighted that “it is possible to verify that [os protocolos de ação] they lack adequate implementation at different levels, with emphasis on the local and community level”.

This year, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel had called for “zero tolerance” for violence against women, but also stated that in Cuba “any crime is exaggerated”, especially gender-based violence.

Independent activists have insisted on the declaration of a “state of emergency for gender-based violence” and lamented that the government has not taken any measures in this direction.

They also defended a comprehensive law against gender-based violence, as gender-based homicide is not criminalized in the Penal Code, and the implementation of protocols to prevent these acts, as well as the creation of shelters and support systems for women and children in danger. .
