“EIn 2020, it was the voters of South Carolina who proved the experts wrong, breathed new life into our campaign, and put us on the path to winning the presidency,” Biden recalled in a statement.

“In 2024, the people of South Carolina spoke again and I have no doubt that they put us on the path to a new presidency and a new defeat for Donald Trump,” added the Democrat.

The head of state overwhelmingly defeated, with 96.4% of the votes, the other top Democrats in the South Carolina vote, including Representative Dean Phillips, from Minnesota, and writer Marianne Williamson.

The campaign has invested heavily in boosting Biden’s turnout, aiming to test efforts to mobilize Black voters, who are a key part of the Democratic vote in South Carolina and central to the President’s strategy for victory in November.

Biden had pushed for the South Carolina Democratic primary to officially begin the party’s nominating process.

The President thus obtains the 55 delegates allocated by South Carolina, but needs the support of almost two thousand to officially proclaim himself as the Democratic candidate for the November elections.

The 81-year-old head of government was in California on Saturday night before heading to Nevada (west) for the next Democratic primaries.

In Michigan, a large and diverse state, the Democratic primary is February 27, before voting on March 5, known as “Super Tuesday.”

The South Carolina Republican primary is February 24th.

The state is considered a conservative stronghold, where the last Democratic presidential candidate to win was Jimmy Carter in 1976.
