EIn a statement, the Israeli Armed Forces described that Hamas divers were trying to reach the area of ’kibbutz’ Zikim, in the south of Israel and very close to the Gaza Strip, a Palestinian enclave controlled by the Islamist group since 2007.
Israeli military planes destroyed the Hamas military complex from where the fighters left for Israeli soil.
The Army, which did not specify the number of Hamas divers who attempted to enter its territory, stated that searches in that area were continuing.
According to Israeli media outlets, there could be between four and eight Hamas members killed, but without official confirmation.
On October 7, Hamas launched a surprise attack against southern Israel with the launch of thousands of rockets and the incursion of armed militiamen, taking more than two hundred hostages.
In response, Israel declared war on Hamas, a movement that is classified as terrorist by the European Union (EU) and the United States, bombing several of the group’s infrastructures in the Gaza Strip. It also imposed a total siege on the territory, cutting off water, fuel and electricity supplies.
The conflict has already caused thousands of deaths and injuries, among military personnel and civilians, in both territories.
