The Ecuadorian prison service reported this Monday, April 8, 2024, that the former vice president Jorge Glaswho has been in prison since last Saturday in a maximum security prison in the city of Guayaquil after being detained inside the Mexican Embassy in Quito, He suffered a health breakdown from not eating.

This information contradicted the version of those close to the former vice president who had warned of the possibility of a suicide attempt by Glas due to a drug overdose.
Glas will remain under observation and will return to prison after being evaluated at the Guayaquil Naval Hospital.according to the National Service for Comprehensive Attention to Persons Deprived of Liberty (SNAI), the State penitentiary unit.

The source reported that, on Monday morning, Glas did not answer the call for the count of inmates in the La Roca maximum security prison and that, therefore, the health care protocols were activated when it was determined that the inmate had suffered decompensation due to his “refusal to consume the food” provided in the previous 24 hours.

Paramedics from the Ministry of Health transferred Glas to the Guayaquil Naval Hospital where he was admitted, although at the moment his condition is “stable and will remain under observation for the next few hours, upon return” to La Roca, added the source.

In the morning, sources close to the former vice president and several media outlets warned that Glas had attempted suicide with an overdose of medication and that he had been transferred to the Guayaquil Military Hospital.

The digital media Primicias even reported that Glas had been declared in a medical coma, according to a police report on the causes of the breakdown due to the “intake of anxiolytic, antidepressant and sedative medications“.

Likewise, it was reported that the former vice president of Rafael Correa’s government (2007-2017) would have been stabilized in the medical unit to which he was transferred.

The prison authorities took a while to deliver the official version, despite the insistence of the press.

Former President Correa, who resides in Belgium, also commented on his X network account about Glas’s alleged transfer to a hospital and wrote: “It was what I feared. The scoundrels will jump for joy. Strength, Jorge!“.

Glas was arrested last Friday after a violent raid by Ecuadorian police at the Mexican Embassy in Quito and was finally transferred to the maximum security prison in Guayaquil.

The Ecuadorian police operation led to the breaking of diplomatic relations between Mexico and Ecuador.
