“O Government of the Maldives has declared its intention to intervene in the case brought by South Africa against Israel at the ICJ, on the premise that Israel violates the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide,” the presidential office said in a statement.

The island country considers that “Israel’s demands for the immediate withdrawal of thousands of Palestinian civilians seeking refuge in eastern Rafah are proof of Israel’s failure to comply with the provisional measures ordered by the International Court of Justice”, according to the text.

“These genocidal acts perpetrated by Israeli occupation forces under the pretext of security concerns have resulted in mass displacement, famine and the blockade of humanitarian aid,” the statement added.

The Asian country joins other countries such as Egypt and Turkey, which also recently announced their formal intervention to support South Africa’s complaint against Israel.

Israel launched an offensive in the Gaza Strip following the Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023, which caused around 1,200 deaths and more than 200 hostages in Israeli territory.

The military offensive in Gaza has so far caused more than 35,000 Palestinian deaths, according to Hamas-controlled Gaza authorities.
