A The UN’s highest judicial body, based in The Hague, will issue an “advisory opinion” on July 19 at 3 p.m. local time (2 p.m. in Lisbon), it said in a statement. Although it is not binding, it could increase the growing international legal pressure on Israel in the context of the ongoing war in Gaza.
The current conflict was triggered by an attack by the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas against southern Israel on October 7, which according to official Israeli figures caused 1,195 deaths among civilians and military personnel.
In response, Israel vowed to destroy Hamas and launched an offensive that has left 38,345 people dead, most of them civilians, according to the latest tally from the Hamas-led Gaza Strip government’s health ministry.
On December 31, 2022, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution requesting the ICJ to provide an “advisory opinion” on the “legal consequences arising from Israel’s policies and practices in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem.”
During several hearings in February, most of the participants called on Israel to end the occupation, which began in particular after the Six-Day War in 1967.
Israel did not participate in the hearings but submitted a written statement in which it called the questions raised in court “prejudicial” and “biased”.
These hearings are separate from a case brought to the ICJ by South Africa, which accuses Israel of committing genocide in the Gaza Strip.
In January, the court called on Israel to stop any acts of genocide in the small Palestinian enclave, and in May it ordered an end to the Israeli military offensive in the southern Gaza Strip town of Rafah.
