OThe United States “will quickly provide significant new military assistance to meet Ukraine’s urgent battlefield and air defense needs,” according to a White House press release about the conversation between the two leaders.

In turn, Zelensky expressed, according to a message he published on the X network, gratitude to Biden “for his unwavering support for Ukraine and for his true global leadership.”

The Ukrainian President also said he had obtained guarantees from his American counterpart that the new aid package will be “fast and powerful and will strengthen the air defense, long-range and artillery capabilities” of Kyiv’s forces.

According to the White House, Joe Biden also spoke with the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and both agreed that it was vital to continue supporting Ukraine.

The European bloc indicated today that it would continue to provide assistance to Kyiv, but without announcing concrete measures, at a time when the Ukrainians demand anti-aircraft defense batteries in particular.

The lower house of the US Congress, with a Republican majority, adopted on Saturday a gigantic security spending program, demanded for months by Biden and eagerly awaited by Ukraine.

The Ukrainian army faces a shortage of new recruits and ammunition, which weakens it in the face of constant pressure from Russian troops in the east of the country.

The new aid package is expected to be approved on Tuesday by the Democratic-majority Senate.
