O Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said this Tuesday that Kyiv is working to ensure “a strong and far-reaching step” towards NATO membership at the military alliance’s next summit, which will take place in Washington , in July.

This position was shared during a press conference, after the diplomat was asked about Ukraine’s objectives for the NATO summit.

The Ukrainian minister declined to elaborate, but said there had been “very active engagement” with NATO leadership and allies.

“We think that Ukraine meets the main membership criteria, which is the ability to defend NATO’s borders. That’s what we are doing by defending Ukraine,” he said.

“We are working hard to take a strong and far-reaching step towards Ukraine’s accession to NATO at the Washington summit,” he said.

It is recalled, however, that the US ambassador to NATO, Julianne Smith, had said, last month, that the alliance is not expected to issue an invitation to join Ukraine at the next summit.

Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022. The offensive plunged Europe into what is considered the most serious security crisis since World War II (1939-1945).

Ukraine’s Western allies have supplied weapons to Kyiv and approved successive sanctions packages against Russian interests to try to diminish Moscow’s ability to finance the war effort.

The NATO summit will be held this summer in Washington, where Ukraine hopes to make further progress towards NATO membership.
