“I’m dying”: José ‘Pepe’ Mujica, former president of Uruguay, reports that his cancer has spread

“I need to inform you that last Friday I went to the Casmu (medical center) to have a check-up in which it was discovered that I have a tumor in the esophagus, which is obviously very serious and is doubly complex in my case, because I suffer from a disease immunological more than 20 years ago,” the former president said that day.

Shortly afterwards, he noted that the tumor was malignant and had to be treated with radiotherapy, a procedure that was carried out in Montevideo.

On December 27, the former president underwent surgery in which a stent was successfully placed in his esophagus.

Doctor confirms metastasis

José Mujica’s personal doctor, Raquel Pannone, confirmed this Thursday that the former president of Uruguay has metastases in his liver and assured that he “wants to be calm” to do with his time “whatever he wants to do.”

He is in his farm, he is calm, he is feeding orally and through the gastrostomy that we had placed before to complement the caloric intake and the intake of nutrients, because you can’t necessarily always receive everything you need orally,” he explained.

“Today he is wandering around. He is calm in his house. That has not changed from yesterday to today, nor will it change in a short period of time. This situation is going to continue,” added Pannone, who assured that for various reasons he did not can tell how long the situation will remain that way.
