“As an association that represents the demands of its nearly 600 members, we have tried to mediate with the IOR, We have provided arguments to highlight how the birth of a new family cannot be compromised by bureaucratic regulations, we have consulted experts in canon law, but it has been of no use.“, the organization assures.

The ADVL explained in a statement that what resulted from its attempts was a “cold communication that referred to a regulation, which in fact has retroactive effects, given that our two colleagues had already set the date and place of the wedding when the new regulation was issued.”

The organization assures that has been “working for three years to ensure that the Vatican also establishes labour laws that take into account the legitimate aspirations of individuals and strengthen our sense of community.”

“With everyone’s help we will continue to act, we will strengthen ourselves as the organization desired by Saint John Paul II, so that the Adlv can be an actor of agreement in all workplaces,” he concludes.

In practice, The termination of the employment contract is expected after 30 days of the celebration of the marriage, unless one of the spouses decides to voluntarily resign from employment.

“The Romeos and Juliets from beyond the Tiber had the courage to challenge the authorities and, above all, the strange regulations recently published by the IOR,” notes the Roman daily, which brought the situation of these two Vatican employees to light last July.

Since then, the issue has “been blown up, bounced around various curial tables, analyzed by prelates and jurists but without any possible solution,” according to the source, who points out that “for the two young men the only existing possibility to try to keep their jobs would be a direct intervention by the pontiff.”

The newlyweds were already suspended for a few days after revealing their story by the IOR, which in a note stated that its objective “is exclusively to guarantee conditions of equal treatment among staff.”
