At least 32 people survived today when a passenger plane that was covering the route between the Azerbaijani capital, Baku, and the Russian city of Grozny crashed in Kazakhstan, official sources reported.

“According to available data, 32 people survived the crash of the (Azerbaijani) airline AZAL plane in Kazakhstan,” he said at a press conference. Kanan Zeinalovspokesperson for the Prosecutor General’s Office of Azerbaijan.

The official added that specialists from Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan are working together to clarify the causes of the tragedy.

“All versions are being evaluated and the corresponding examinations are being carried out,” he stated.

Previously, the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Kazakhstan reported 28 survivors in the plane crash, which took place this morning next to the airport in the city of Aktau, on the shores of the Caspian Sea.

All survivors have been hospitalized and some are in intensive care units, according to health sources. Among the injured, there are two minors, ages 11 and 16.

On board the crashed Azerbaijan Airlines Embraer 190 67 people were travelingincluding five crew members.

“It was a regular flight. It was supposed to fly to Grozny, but due to fog they sent it to Makhachkala and from there, apparently, to Aktau,” a spokesperson for the airport in the Chechen capital told the TASS agency.

According to preliminary data, the explosion of an oxygen cylinder on board the aircraft could have been one of the causes of the accident.

At the same time, Azerbaijan Airlines pointed out that the accident could have been caused by the collision of the aircraft with a flock of birds.

The Ministry of Transport of Kazakhstan indicated that among the passengers of the aircraft there were 37 Azerbaijanis, 16 Russians, 6 Kazakhs and three Kyrgyz.

A fire broke out at the scene of the accident and was put out by firefighters, according to sources from the Kazakh emergency services.

According to the crisis office created after the plane crash, “the crew sent a distress signal at 08:35 local time (03:35 GMT) and reported a failure in the control system.”

“Then at 08:49 they requested an emergency landing in Aktau and tried to do so in direct mode, however, at 09:28 the plane crashed into the ground,” they said.

The President of Kazakhstan, Kasim-Yomart Tokayev, offered his condolences to his Azerbaijani colleague, Ilham Aliyev, for the accident of the Azerbaijani plane.

Meanwhile Aliyev, who was flying in Russian airspace to attend an informal summit of the leaders of the Commonwealth of Independent States, being held today outside St. Petersburg, canceled his plans and ordered the pilot of his plane turn around and head to Baku
