El Salvador closed 2024 with 114 homicides, about 26% less than those registered in 2023, according to data released this Wednesday by the attorney general, Rodolfo Delgado. “As of December 31, 2024, our country records historic figures in the reduction of intentional homicides,” Delgado published in X and noted that 112 of the 114 murders were solved.

And the figure for 2024 is 40 homicides lower than the 154 violent deaths in 2023, the main causes being “family intolerance” (45), “social intolerance” (35) and “general crime” (34).

Musk’s comment takes on greater importance, since the magnate will be part of the new Trump administration, as he will lead, together with former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, a new Department of Government Efficiency, an office that will be known by the abbreviation Doge, according to Trump, an apparent reference to the Dogecoin cryptocurrency, which Musk has supported, calling it “the people’s cryptocurrency.”

What is the reason for the drop in homicides in El Salvador?

The Salvadoran authorities attribute the drop in homicides during Nayib Bukele’s Government to his Territorial Control Plan and the suspension of constitutional guarantees through the emergency regime, in force since March 2022.

However, the number of violent deaths in the Central American country began to decline after 2015, a year that has been considered the most violent in recent Salvadoran history with 103 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants, and the drop was accentuated in 2019, when The Bukele Administration began.

Government statistics on homicides do not include deaths of alleged gang members in confrontations with police, the discovery of bones and deaths of alleged criminals at the hands of citizens, cases that were included in the figures of previous governments.

The emergency regime was approved after the murder of more than 80 people in a weekend at the end of March 2022, which investigations by the local media El Faro indicate that it occurred due to the breakdown of an agreement between the Government and the gangs. criminals.

This extraordinary measure has become the Government’s main and only bet against gangs, which also earned President Bukele his immediate re-election despite the constitutional prohibition.
