The Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo González Urrutia assured this Saturday, January 4, in Montevideo, capital of Uruguay, that the recovery of his country and the freedom “of all political prisoners” will be achieved. He said this in the speech he gave before hundreds of Venezuelans who accompanied him outside the presidential residence, where he met with the Uruguayan president, Luis Lacalle Pou, and Foreign Minister Omar Paganini.

“I want to leave you a message of hope, a message of faith that we are going to achieve the recovery of our Venezuela. And along with the recovery of democracy We are going to recover the freedom of all political, civil and military prisoners. Since I have to board a plane soon, I didn’t want to leave Montevideo without spending a few minutes with you. “I thank you for this moment,” he said.

On the other hand, Edmundo González took the opportunity to thank Lacalle Pou “for having been supportive of the Venezuelan cause” for a long time.

Earlier, Edmundo González Urrutia, who will now visit Panama and the United States, met in Buenos Aires with the president of Argentina, Javier Mileywho recognized him as the elected president in the elections last July 28.

The National Electoral Council (CNE) awarded victory in the July elections to Maduro, a result questioned by the main anti-Chavista coalition, the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD) and much of the international community.
González Urrutia has reiterated that he will return to Venezuela to assume the Presidency of his country on January 10. Meanwhile, Maduro, who has publicly received the support of State institutions, including the Bolivarian National Armed Forces, has also insisted that he will be sworn in as reelected president that day.

This Thursday, the Venezuelan Police offered a $100,000 reward for anyone who knows the whereabouts of Edmundo González Urrutia, who has been exiled in Spain since last September.
After the presidential elections in Venezuela were held, the Uruguayan Government recognized González Urrutia as the winner. On August 2, Paganini indicated in his X account: “Based on the overwhelming evidence, it is clear to Uruguay that Edmundo González Urrutia obtained the majority of votes in the presidential elections in Venezuela.”
“It is increasingly clear that he won the July 28 elections. More than 85% of the minutes have been compiled, no one has been able to deny it. There is no doubt that he is the elected president of Venezuela. Unfortunately the dictatorship decided to perpetuate itself” , he reiterated this Saturday in a press conference.
“The most important thing for Venezuela is that Venezuelans find the paths to democracy. I think it is clear that in the elections of July 28, Edmundo was clearly victorious by quite a majority and that the regime does not want to recognize this,” he indicated. Paganini.
And he added: “I wish the regime would recognize it and enter into a process of democratic exit. Uruguay continues to ask that Nicolás Maduro’s regime accept a path of transition to democracy. It seemed that July 28 was it. They are denying it. until the last minute, I wish they would reconsider“.
